How Important is Acoustic Guitar Tuning
Always remember to tune up. This means going from loose to tight until the string is in tune. If you go too tightly and then loosen the string slightly to put it in tune, this is referred to as tuning down. It is always best to loosen the string and then retighten it to put it into tune. Tuning up keeps the string in tune in a much better fashion and the results are more precise.
If you don’t purchase an electronic tuner, you still need to have a reference for pitch when playing acoustic guitar. You can use another guitar, a piano, tuning fork or an MP3 that you are certain is already in tune. Acoustic guitar tuning with an electronic tuner will consistently provide reliable tuning. But if you choose to tune the traditional way then use an electronic tuner to test your results. This is a great way to learn to develop your ear.
To begin tuning your guitar, use the refence pitch to tune the sixth string (the thickest string) to low E. Once this string sounds right, the other strings can be tuned to their correct pitch based on that note. There is a reason why this technique works, but the explanation is long. Acoustic guitar tuning is a bit like driving. You don’t have to understand the internal combustion engine to drive a car, and you don’t have to understand music theory to tune your guitar.
Here’s how to do your acoustic guitar tuning:
1. Strum (in tune) the sixth string on the fifth fret. Tune the open fifth string to that exact note.
2. Strum the fifth string on the fifth fret. Tune the open fourth string to the same note.
3. Tune the fourth string on the fifth fret. Tune the open third to the same note.
4. Follow closely; this is different than the above. Play the third string on the fourth fret and tune the open second string to this note.
5. Play the second string on the fifth fret and tune your open first string to this note.
If you’re just starting out with acoustic guitar tuning, you may want to ask someone at the music store when you purchased
your guitar to show you how to do acoustic guitar tuning the proper way. Then just keep practicing until you’re comfortable
with the process. It takes time and practice to learn to do acoustic guitar tuning, especially by ear. For the novice, the simplest way to perform acoustic guitar tuning is with the use of an electronic tuner. You can find one for around $20 and you will definitely get your money’s worth. An electronic tuner that is made specifically for tuning guitars has the ability to recognize which string is being played.

Become a Professional Singer – Three Core Skills You Must First Master
Many people consider taking their singing hobby and turning it into a singing career. Most don’t know how. In this article I will be explaining the three core elements you need to make it as a singer.
Professional singers can broadly be divided into two categories – Popular or classical. Whilst many of the principals I will outline below apply to both worlds, there is much more emphasis on vocal training in the classical world. The rest of this article is therefore written with popular music singers in mind.
Pro singers in the popular music world can be divided once again into those who perform original material and those who perform cover versions of already popular songs. These singers maybe solo vocalists, or perform as part of a band. Successful singers in both groups usually have the following three core elements in common.
- Voice
- Performance
- Music
These may seem obvious, but please read on as I develop these ideas.Voice
You don’t need to have an amazing voice to become a professional singer, but it sure helps. Neither do you need to have any formal vocal training, although having a few lessons with a vocal coach can certainly help you learn the basic key principles that can help you improve much faster. The most important thing to do as a budding professional singer is practice. Only through practice will you develop the vocal strength, stamina and lung capacity you need to be a performer.
It will pay to be honest to yourself about your singing abilities at this early stage. Get some friends opinions, ask them to be honest, and be prepared for the worst. At least if you find out that you only sound good in your own head now, you won’t waste years of your life.
Performance
The first thing must have for a professional singer is confidence. Don’t worry if you haven’t got this yet, singing is a great way of developing your self confidence. You need to get out to some karaoke nights, open mic nights and talent competitions to overcome your fear before you can start getting paid to sing.
You must also work to develop your own style as a musician. Once you’ve mastered your tracks, play around with the phrasing and melodies and take time to try new things. You need to stand out from the crowd.
Your on stage image is very important. Even if you’re in a band that just wears jeans and tee shirts on stage, make sure they are clean and fit well. A poor image makes a bad first (and lasting) impression on your audience.
Music
The final element is the music. You can have a great voice and excellent presentation, but if your music is awful you won’t get very far.
There are three ways to get music to sing:-
- Cover Versions – download backing tracks off the internet
- Original material – write your own music
- Original material (2) – find someone else to write music for you
The most important thing that you need to remember, until you’re famous is that you must keep the music you perform appropriate for the audience. In conclusion, you must master three core elements can you start to think about getting paid for your work as a singer. Why not try and offer your singing services to a charity night for free, so you can test out your skills in front of a live audience, and get some experience of what it’s like to be a professional singer.
Best of luck!

Profiles in Classical Guitar: Julian Bream
In 1960 he formed a group called the Julian Bream Consort. It was an Elizabethan period ensemble for which Bream played the lute. This Consort brought about a revival in interest of the Elizabethan era which is considered to be a period of time that was the absolute pinnacle of the English Renaissance. His work with this group earned him a Grammy award for best chamber music performance. This award would be the first of many awards which include three more Grammy awards.
One of the most important contributions he made to the world of the classical guitar was his development of a complete repertoire for performance. His transcriptions of works for guitar and lute span five centuries and he has particularly focused on lute works from the Elizabethan era and Spanish guitar works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has also had many composers create works specifically for him.
Ambassador to the media of the Twentieth Century
Bream has embraced television and radio and used these media to bring classical guitar and lute to a mass audience. His 2003 DVD video profile Julian Bream: My Life in Music, which is a three hour long piece, includes interviews and performances and is considered to be one of the finest contributions ever made to the world of Classical Guitar. He has also created a British television series entitled Guitarra! It charts a musical journey across Spain.
Learn More about Him
If you are looking to read more about him there is a newly published book called The Art of Julian Bream. If you are looking to experience some of his music you might want to start with his collaborative work with John Williams. They are a two volume set entitled Together and Together Again. If you want a more encompassing view of his music as it spans the decades he has a two volume CD set called The Ultimate Guitar Collection. The first CD is a compilation of many of his transcriptions and the second CD focuses on his works for Spanish guitar.
Julian Bream is one of the greatest classical of the modern day. His tireless performance and work with the guitar has spanned many decades of personal performance and many centuries of music. He has bridged the gap between the past and the future by giving us an enormous repertoire of music in just about every modern mode of media from CD to television and film. And it is his particular gift for transcription and interpretation that has enabled him to bring five centuries of plucked instrument music into the modern world.
